Mother Holle Page #2
"Mother Holle" is a classic fairytale by the Brothers Grimm that presents the story of two girls - a lazy and ugly one, and a diligent beautiful one. Forced by her unkind stepmother to spin beside a well, the diligent girl eventually falls in. Instead of drowning, she finds herself in a strange place where she helps an old woman, Mother Holle. Grateful for the girl's service, Mother Holle rewards her with gold. When she returns home, her stepmother sends her own daughter down the well, hoping for the same outcome. However, the lazy girl is unwilling to help Mother Holle and comes back covered with pitch as punishment. The tale teaches about the rewards of hard work and the consequences of idleness.

as she had led her sister, to the broad gateway; but as she was passing through, instead of the shower of gold, a great bucketful of pitch came pouring over her. ‘That is in return for your services,’ said the old woman, and she shut the gate. So the lazy girl had to go home covered with pitch, and the cock on the well called out as she saw her: ‘Cock-a-doodle-doo! Your dirty daughter’s come back to you.’ But, try what she would, she could not get the pitch off and it stuck to her as long as she lived.
